Truth About Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day History

Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine is popularly known as Saint Valentine's Day. It is a holiday that is observed on February 14 every year. Though it is celebrated in many countries around the world, but it’s not a holiday in most of them.

For one or more Christian saints named Valentinus, St. Valentine’s Day began as liturgical celebration. For the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, several martyrdom stories were invited and those are later added to martyrologies.

Today, in the Lutheran Church as well as in the Anglican Communion, St. Valentine’s is treated as an official feast day within the community of people.  Valentine’s Day is known to be celebrated on July 6 and July 30 by the Eastern Orthodox Church in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint and Hieromartyr respectively.  It is recognized in Brazil on June 12 as Dia de Sao Valentim.

Emperor Claudius II Gothicus ruled the Roman Empire during the third century. His harsh leadership ways and his habit for getting into wars and abusing his people made him so cruel that he was even nicknamed as Claudius the Cruel. He was always into war and was so much addicted to violence that during the third century, it became a difficult time for recruitment of so many numbers of solders.

Claudius had the notion that he was able to get more soldiers for his army as Roman men loved their families and so didn't want to leave them behind. For this, he ordered for the cancellation of all engagements and marriages so that young men could not marry. There were thousands of couples whose dreams got trashed due to this cruel order of Claudius and though it was an injustice to people, no one could stand up for this cruelty.

Unable to see all this happenings, a simple Christian priest who name was Valentine came forward and stood by love.  He planned carefully and secretly started marrying off couples before going to the war and going against emperor’s order. During 269 AD the emperor found out about those secret marriages and threw Valentine into the prison and ordered for his death.

During his last days in prison, he is said to fell in love with a blind girl, who was supposedly the daughter of the jailer. She used to visit him quite often in the prison. Day before his execution, Valentine wrote her a sonnet in ink that he squeezed from violets.

He didn't have any other means to write to her so wrote with ink taken from violets.  It is said that those words of love written by him made the blind women see again. As he was clubbed to death by Roman executioners, so the romance was a brief one.

St. Valentine sacrificed his life and love for the young people so that they could have families, children and remain happy always. He may have been dead but the spirit for which he did all these did not die.

The story of his commitment and sacrifice is still considered legendary in Rome even after centuries. With time, the Catholic Church decided to celebrate a feast in his honor and he was also granted Sainthood. The day February 14 was chosen to be the day of celebration as the ancient believed that birds started to mate on that very day.

In early modern England, the development of Valentine’s Day customs started and it got spread throughout the Anglosphere in the 19th century. These customs began spreading to other countries along with other zones of American pop culture in the later 20’s and early 21st centuries, but its effect is not limited more than that of Halloween.

In Valentine’s Day, normally trees in San Diego re decorated with hearts. Valentine's Day is nicely celebrated in many East Asian countries and due to concentrated marketing effort, Chinese and South Koreans are often seen spending the most money on Valentine's gifts.
It’s always good to know the truth behind everything that we celebrate and Valentine’s Day is no different. And so you got to know that Valentine’s Day is truly based on the concept of love in marriage.

The true spirit of Valentine’s Day will last throughout the year if you are doing your share to keep the love in your marriage burning. Try your hands in giving cards, gifts, having a candle light dinner and try to share special words with the most important person in your life and make it memorable.

These are few ways to retain your love into your marriage:

1) Try to schedule your priority time taking your half in consideration. For example, try to take out time from your busy schedule and set a date every two or three week so as to spend some quality time together.

2) Try to share your good and bad moments together. If you are asked when was the last time you shared something really funny and both of you chuckled together, you probably don’t know. So try to loosen up a bit and laugh and live whole heartedly!

3) Try to find a hobby or activity that you both enjoy like playing tennis, bowling, fishing, biking or hiking. In short, try to play together. It will make your life interesting.

4) Be romantic together. Spend some time with better half away each year to bring freshness in your relation, just the two of few with no buddies allowed. A romantic note of encouragement in the mail once in a while to say how much you love the other person is also a good way to sound more special. Try to be romantic. You can also share greetings or gifts for your love.

Though Valentine’s Day is a good occasion to put your feelings forward, but for long lasting relationship, the one and only way to have the flame sparkling of is making every day to be a Hallmark moment.
